“Porsche celebrated their race victories on Race Tracks, Grand Prix Circuits and Rally Courses with a Poster and this has resulted in hundreds of highly collectible posters dating back to 1951.”

The highly acclaimed and trendsetting post war graphic artist Erich Strenger was instrumental in making these posters the icons they are today. Strenger received the commission to design posters and advertisements for Porsche from Racing Driver and head of PR Richard Von Frankenberg.

Strenger was responsible for the individual and memorable design language up until his death in 1987.

His work and that of his successors is documented in two publications which are a must for any collector.

The first edition was published in 1984 and features mainly black and white plates, the second and more comprehensive edition was published in 2008 and features full colour. Both highly collectible editions feature multi lingual commentary.

There is also a book by the same publisher documenting Strengers career which is German text only.

How do you start collecting? Buy one of the above mentioned books and pick a period, the very early posters are extremely rare and priced accordingly. The golden period in my opinion is from 1961 to 1981 with the 60’s and 70’s seeing Strenger at his best. It is worth noting that another artist called Volz produced some iconic designs during the Strenger period.

Some of the most popular posters feature the iconic 911 in its various guises but some of the Strenger artwork during the heady days of Can Am racing are fantastic a true reflection of the period.

Happy collecting!
